Waldorf Curriculum Journey Part 2 - The Seven Year Change
Nov 19, 2024As a child nears seven, a shift occurs. While they still engage with their surroundings through their senses, they begin responding more deeply to spoken words and the authority of adults. This period marks a new sensitivity to what is said and how it is expressed, as spoken words can either comfort or harm their emotional world.
At this stage, children’s imaginations are still vivid, bridging their inner lives with the outer world. They start to follow directions and seek to understand through stories and symbolic images. As they become more anchored in their bodies, they’re ready to learn through beauty and emotional connection.
The curriculum adapts to meet these changes, introducing fairy tales and stories of saints and fables. Artistic activities like painting, drawing, singing, and flute playing are essential, helping children connect with the stories they hear. They engage in modeling with beeswax and continue with handwork, which builds perseverance. Each day, they delve into the magic of “Once Upon a Time,” laying the foundation for literacy, math, and music.
